Why is paper so expensive and in short supply currently?

2 min

Price increases have been all over the news lately, one industry close to our heart that has been going through some really difficult times is the paper industry, which is why you may have noticed lots of paper lines out of stock and prices have drastically risen.

We just wanted to add some clarification around the paper industry and the reasons behind paper shortages and sudden price rises.

Energy costs rises

You've probably read in the news and started to see your energy bills from home and within the business, where prices have risen over 50% for the year, equally this has impacted on paper mills across Europe, therefore causing the cost to run such facilities to rise.

Strikes at paper mills

One of the largest paper mills in Europe (UPM) went through industrial strike action from January-May. As a result, this means no new materials have been manufactured. The strikes only just ended in the middle of May, but there is still a backlog of 4 months workload.

Demand for paper products

Many companies who use plastic packaging have had to look at paper alternatives due to April's plastic packaging tax that came in. This has lead to paper mills experiencing shortages due to unprecedented demand on paper-based products. After the past 2 years where demand suddenly fell, this has suddenyl started to pick back up with a return to business back in place, and the mills don't have the raw materials to cope.

Shipping freight

You've probably seen all the containers of stock waiting to come into port on the news. The cost to ship increased hugely during the pandemic and is still at a record high. Shipping timescales are also longer due to traffic and times to book into a port both abroad and here in the UK for drop-off.
